We sometimes refer to sleep as “beauty rest”, and it’s certainly true. A good night’s sleep makes your skin look beautiful and radiant.
We need seven to eight hours of sleep every day. Enough sleep is vital in preserving and mending our body and mind. While sleeping our brains use neuronal connections that would otherwise deteriorate from lack of activity. During deep sleep, cell growth and cell repair takes place to fight the effects of stress and even sun exposure.
Sleep is also important in fighting off the most common infections. Did you ever wonder why you feel drowsy when you have a cold? That’s because our immune system releases a sleep-inducing chemical to fight a cold or an infection.
The effect of lack of sleep is cumulative. If you don’t get enough sleep one night, you’ll feel the effects the next day, and if you don’t get enough rest the next day, you will feel the effects of two nights without proper sleep.
The most evident signs sleep deficit, dark circles around the eyes and the prominent eye bags. Lack of sleep also results to dull complexion, premature appearance of fine lines and, in some cases, rash and eczema. Without proper sleep, your skin will not be able to withstand environmental irritants.
Not getting enough sleep affects not just your skin but also your overall health.
Power nap
If your schedule won’t permit getting a full eight-hour sleep every night, a power nap might help. Napping in the afternoon for 15-30 minutes can benefit the body. Around eight hours after being up, our energy goes down and getting that power nap will refresh your body and mind. Power napping reduces stress and improves the cognitive powers of the mind.
