Fish Pedicure

This treatment is done by soaking your feet (or any part of your body) in a tank of water with Garra Rufa. These are tiny toothless fish that nibble off dead skin to reveal a healthy and soft dermis. Garra Rufa is also known as doctor fish for it can relieve various skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.  The nibbling may feel a bit ticklish and may cause slight tingling. After the procedure, your feet will definitely feel softer and smoother.

Fish pedicure is assumed to be safe because the fish only eats up the dead skin cells. However, there is also an argument that the skin-eating fish can be a tool for passing on of bacteria from one client to another which may cause infection. These little skin-doctors are also kept in non-chlorinated water which could be a source of bacteria and fungi. Spa owners contest this by saying that the tank of water has an ultraviolet filter which keeps it sanitized.

In addition, some impostor salons are substituting the expensive Garra Rafu with a cheaper one with teeth called “chin chin”, which means they can cause tiny wounds. While there have been no reports of infection due to fish pedicure, people are advised to be extra meticulous if trying out this treatment. Individual tanks are of course safer than one big tank for all. Also, make sure that they thoroughly clean your feet before asking you to soak.

Leech Detox

Wonder how Demi Moore manages to look way younger than her age? She recently divulged her new cleansing beauty secret, leech detox. She talks about the procedure. First, you are prepped up by shaving your body and bathing in turpentine. Then, the highly trained medical leeches are placed on your skin so they could suck the blood. It hurts initially but after the first bite, you can relax and wait for the little creature to become full and crawl out. These invertebrates are said to detoxify by releasing an enzyme to the blood.

Such claims of the leech detox are however negated by Dr. Ed Zimney in his report 1. Dr. Zimney says that an enzyme is indeed released but only to inhibit-blood clotting so that the leech can continue to suck until it’s full. This enzyme acts only on the bite-site and is not absorbed into the bloodstream so no detoxification occurs. He also mentioned possible risks associated with this therapy such as excessive bleeding, allergic reactions and infection.

Cactus and Tequila Massage

Before you panic, you must know that the cactus paddies used in this massage, called nopal, are without thorns. Cactus is known for its healing properties because it contains anti-oxidants which is essential to delay skin aging. Antioxidants help flush out toxins and rehydrate the skin, thus giving a skin the feeling of rejuvenation after a cactus massage.

The use of cactus as a medicinal plant started way back from the Mexican Indian Tribes. Studies have revealed that cactus contains phytochemicals which is a cancer-fighting nutrient. There were also experiments which prove the healing effects of cactus. It prevented scar formation and inflammation of the wounded areas.

Together with the cactus paddies, the body is also massaged with a scrub made with tequila, salt and fresh lime juice. This combination brings healing, detoxifying, cleansing, nourishing and conditioning altogether.

Golden Facial

Historians say that Cleopatra slept in gold mask every night to keep her skin youthful looking. Today, there is a modern version of Cleopatra’s gold regimen. It is a mask of gold leaf of 24 karat gold applied on to face and massaged until the gold disappears completely. Other salons use a facial gold cream or gold gel which contains 24-karat gold, aloe vera, wheat germ oil and sandalwood.

Gold as a soft metal is easily absorbed by the skin. Once it has penetrated the skin, it rejuvenates skin by removing wrinkles, banishing blemishes and erasing age spots. It is also known to work for both dry and oily skin types. Gold facial also assists in improving blood circulation and cell renewal.

It’s both amazing and amusing to know the means people are willing to do just to keep their skin at its finest. It’s true that we cannot attest to the effectiveness of such procedures, we can only guarantee you the efficacy of our products because, once, we understand how they are made; there are studies that support the efficacy of the ingredients used and, of course, our continuously growing clientele serves as the best testimony.

Update on SouthGain Transition to ChannelAdvisor

Sunday, 2009-03-08

Well the cutover has gone relatively smoothly.  Just a quick update:

  • * All our eBay listings are now 100% through ChannelAdvisor.  This means if you buy anything in our eBay Store now, you should be able to combine anything you want and go through one checkout process.
  • * We still have quite a few inventory items that we haven’t gotten converted yet into the new format and uploaded to our store, but we’re hoping to have that completed this weekend.
  • * We will be updating all the photos over the coming days, so that they meet the requirements of multiple marketplaces, and to also reflect the new Diana Stalder packaging for several items.
  • * We are no longer shipping most Diana Stalder Surely White products with the little plastic boxes–they tend to get damaged during shipment, they add to shipping costs and they don’t really serve any purpose anyway.  Besides, the environment doesn’t need any unnecessary packaging!
  • * It will be a few more days before our shipping systems are fully transitioned.  So in the interim, some customers might not receive automated e-mails with tracking numbers when we ship.  Rest assured that your shipments ARE still going out within one business day.  Just drop us an e-mail if you would like your tracking number and don’t receive it automatically.

That’s it for now.  We’ll keep you updated here.  Of course, feel free to contact us with any questions.

New SouthGain Order Processing System

Sunday, 2009-03-01

Over the next 3-4 days, SouthGain will be transitioning to a new back-end system for order processing known as ChannelAdvisor (see www.channeladvisor.com).  This new system will integrate all our inventory and listings across multiple sales channels, product lines and distribution centers.  This new system is really the key to our upcoming expansion plans for all these areas.  We are first cutting over our Diana Stalder product line on eBay, and we expect to have this transition completed by 05 March.  Once we have that running smoothly, we’ll be ready to expand!

During the transition period, we know there likely will be some bugs or other strange problems that require manual intervention on our part.  For example, if you have open (unpaid) orders from prior to the transition, you will not be able to combine them with orders from after the transition.  Of course, once the transition is complete, order combination will be much simpler.

As always, if you run into any difficulties during the transition, just contact us and we’ll do our best to sort it out.  Thanks in advance for your patience!

Double Check Your Ship-To Address

Wednesday, 2009-01-21

We’ve recently experienced a large number of problems related to customers’ shipping addresses, so we’d like to remind everyone to carefully double check your ship-to address when placing an order.  Remember, if you pay with PayPal, we are required to ship to the address specified when you make your paymenent (not necessarily the address you have on-file with eBay).  If that address is out-of-date or otherwise no longer valid, your shipment will either be returned to us (in which case you’ll have to pay shipping charges again) or it will be delivered to the current resident at that address (in which case you’ll probably never receive your shipment at all).

So please take just a moment to verify your address when you go through the checkout process, especially if you’ve recently moved, or it’s been a long time since you’ve used PayPal.  If you’re not sure what address you have currently on-file with eBay and PayPal, now would be a good time to sign into both accounts and double check.  This simple step could save you a lot of headaches down the road.

SouthGain eBay Store – Auctions or Fixed Price?

Sunday, 2009-01-11

For some of the most popular Diana Stalder items in our eBay store, we have both fixed-price listings and auction listings.  Our auctions are normally listed with free shipping, and the bidding starts at the same price as our fixed-price items.  We also include a “Buy It Now” price that’s equivalent to our regular fixed price plus standard U.S. shipping costs ($2.95 for individual Diana Stalder items).

So if you’re a U.S. buyer and you only intend to purchase a single item, your cost is the same whether you buy the fixed-price item and pay shipping or you do a ”Buy It Now” on the auction item and get free shipping.  But if you intend to buy more than one item, whether you buy from a fixed-price listing or an auction listing can make a big difference in your total cost.

Hopefully an example will help illustrate.  Suppose you live in the U.S.  and you’d like to buy a Diana Stalder Papaya Kojic Soap, a Diana Stalder Surely White Body Whitening Lotion and a Diana Stalder Surely White Whitening Cream with standard shipping.  If you buy these items from the eBay fixed-price listings, your invoice will look like this:

Diana Stalder Papaya Kojic Soap $7.99
Diana Stalder Surely White Body Whitening Lotion $16.99
Diana Stalder Surely White Whitening Cream $11.99
Subtotal $36.97
Combined Shipping $4.85
Grand total $41.82

Remember, for fixed-price Diana Stalder items in our eBay store, U.S. combined shipping is $2.95 for the first item plus $0.95 for each additional item.  Now, if you buy these same items as auction listings, using the “Buy It Now” option on eBay, your invoice will look like this:

Diana Stalder Papaya Kojic Soap $10.94
Diana Stalder Surely White Body Whitening Lotion $19.94
Diana Stalder Surely White Whitening Cream $14.94
Subtotal $45.82
Combined Shipping $0.00
Grand total $45.82

So you could have saved $4.00 by buying everything as a fixed-price listing and taking advantage of our combined shipping discounts, as opposed to buying from the auction listings and using the “Buy It Now” option.

But you might be able to save even more by bidding on the auction items if you have the right combination of patience and good luck.  If you watch the auctions closely, you might be able to win some items for the minimum bid price, and combined with free shipping, this can really give you the best savings.  Here’s an example, using the same items above, and assuming you win each of the auctions for the minimum bid price:

Diana Stalder Papaya Kojic Soap $7.99
Diana Stalder Surely White Body Whitening Lotion $16.99
Diana Stalder Surely White Whitening Cream $11.99
Subtotal $36.97
Combined Shipping $0.00
Grand total $36.97

This represents a considerable $4.85 savings over the fixed-price approach, and a whopping $8.85 over the “Buy It Now” auction listing approach!  Of course, there’s no guarantee with auctions.  You might be outbid at the last second and end up having to wait for the next auction (or remember, you always have the option of just buying from the fixed-price listing).  But if you’re a savvy eBay buyer, bidding in our auctions might just be the best approach for you!

Bottom line, if you intend to buy multiple items, your best bet is either to buy from the fixed-price listing (to save on combined shipping), or to try to win the auctions at a lower price.  If you buy multiple auction items using “Buy It Now,” you are definitely spending more than you have to.

The Truth About Unlabeled Skin Care Products

Monday, 2008-12-22

Without a doubt, the single most common subject we are asked about is unlabeled skin care products, often falsely represented as genuine Diana Stalder products.  Are they simply a generic version of the products SouthGain is selling?  Are they effective?  Are they safe?  Are they legal?  Where do they come from?  Why don’t they have any labels (or why do the labels look like something from a fifth-grader’s school project)?  What are the ingredients?  How do I know what I’m really getting?  If they’re illegal, why can’t eBay or Stalder or FDA or someone stop the sale of these products?

We receive questions like these almost every day!  The sellers who are pushing these unlabeled products have put forth some, well, let’s say “inventive” answers and explanations.  The result has been a great deal of confusion in the marketplace.  We’d like to take a few moments here to provide some straight answers.

First, it is illegal to sell unlabeled (or improperly labeled) cosmetics in the United States.  The following is an excerpt from the FDA’s cosmetic labeling overview page:

Proper labeling is an important aspect of putting a cosmetic product on the market. FDA regulates cosmetic labeling under the authority of both the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) and the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act(FPLA). These laws and their related regulations are intended to protect consumers from health hazards and deceptive practices and to help consumers make informed decisions regarding product purchase.

It is illegal to introduce a misbranded cosmetic into interstate commerce, and such products are subject to regulatory action. Some of the ways a cosmetic can become misbranded are:

  • - its labeling is false or misleading,
  • - its label fails to provide required information,
  • - its required label information is not properly displayed

We’ve seen sellers of these unlabeled products try to explain away a lot of other things, but when it comes to the legality of their products, they simply avoid the question.

Of course, some buyers might be tempted to look the other way when it comes to the legal issues, especially if the products are safe and effective.  But the problem here is that there’s no way to really know what you’re getting when you buy an unlabeled product.  In fact, some of the more prominent sellers of these illegal unlabeled products have completely misrepresented the ingredients.  One of the more flagrant examples involves a seller on eBay (a self-proclaimed goddess, no less!) who continues to claim that her products do not contain hydroquinone, when in fact, hydroquinone is one of the key ingredients.  We know this because we know her real source, and we confirmed the ingredients with them.

So, what are the sources of these unlabeled products?  Several of them remain a mystery.  We believe one of the sources is in China, and may actually contain mercury or other very harmful ingredients.  We suspect some of these products are manufactured in homemade labs.  But perhaps the most common source is BCP, which is a sister to the Diana Stalder brand and part of the Stalder Group of companies.  BCP products are manufactured for the local Philippine market.  They are sold directly to dermatologists who private label the products for sale in their clinics.  These products are not supposed to be resold in their unlabeled state or exported for sale outside the Philippines.  But some unscrupulous dermatologists’ offices are apparently ignoring the terms of their purchase agreements and diverting some of these BCP products to resellers in the U.S. and elsewhere.

The key thing to remember about these BCP products (besides the fact that they’re illegal in the U.S.!) is that their formulations are completely different from the genuine Diana Stalder products that we sell.  Diana Stalder is a premium line, using the best available ingredients to maximize effectiveness.  BCP products are squarely targeted at the lower end of the domestic Philippine market, with the emphasis being on low cost.  Why would anyone want to pay more for a lower-end product when they can get a more effective premium product for the same or better price?!  Also, keep in mind that genuine Diana Stalder products do not contain hydroquinone, while many of the BCP products do.  With the other sources, well who knows what you’re actually getting?!

The good news is that you don’t need to be a party to an illegal sale, and you don’t have to take any chances when it comes to safety or effectiveness–you can buy genuine Diana Stalder products directly from an Authorized Distribution Center (ADC), right here in the U.S.!  SouthGain is the oldest and largest Diana Stalder ADC outside of the Philippines, and we’d be honored to earn your business.

Now, why can’t someone do something to stop the sale of these illegal, misrepresented products?  I guess we’d better save that for the topic of a future blog post.  :-)

Combined Shipping Discounts and the eBay Shipping Calculator

Saturday, 2008-12-13

One of the most frequent problems we see with our eBay customers is that they overpay for shipping and/or shipping insurance.  This happens several times a week and there are two primary reasons:

1) Sometimes the eBay shipping calculator messes up.

2) More often, the buyer pays for multiple items with multiple payment transactions instead of paying for all their items in a single payment transaction.

The most important thing to remember is to always pay in a single transaction.  After you’ve committed to buy the first item, you are presented with a big “Pay Now” button.  If you are only buying one item, go ahead and pay.  But if you intend to buy additional items, do not pay yet!  Instead, follow the “continue shopping with this seller” link.  Repeat this process until you have committed to buy all the items you want.  Once you’ve committed to the last item, then you can go through the checkout process and pay.

Before you pay, however, it’s always a good idea to double check the shipping and insurance charges as calculated by the eBay shipping calculator.  Unfortunately, the calculated total is often wrong, especially when it comes to the insurance charges.  Recently, we’ve also noticed several cases where the eBay shipping calculator charges more than our maximum $9.95.  If you spot an error, or even if you just aren’t sure, stop and send us a note.  Or just wait for us to manually adjust the total and send a revised invoice before you pay.

If you just follow these simple tips, you can rest assured that you are paying the minimum price for shipping and insurance!
